Dr. Blake Bergeron: Colic, Its Causes, and What You Can Do

Why is my baby constantly crying? How do I know if my baby's fussiness is due to colic? What causes colic? When should I seek medical help for my baby? What helps? Can probiotics/OTC gas make a difference?

If any of these questions apply to you and your children, we have the article for you. Our very own Dr. Blake Bergeron answers these questions in his article: Colic, Its Causes, and What You Can Do. Click the link below to read more!

Dr. Frizzell: Vaccinations are Imperative

Dr. Noel K. Frizzell, M.D.

Just this week a couple of high-profile politicians were weighing in with their thoughts on vaccination.  While they both say they are pro-vaccination, they are also supporting the parents’ right to refuse vaccine.  These opinions have prompted a huge media discussion of vaccine and public safety.

I thought this would be a good time to share the thoughts of the physicians at Pediatric Consultants.  Simply put, we strongly believe that vaccines are safe and necessary.  The physicians in our group feel so strongly on this subject that we have decided that we are unwilling to have patients in our practice who choose not to vaccinate.  Not vaccinating a child carries significant risks that we are just not willing to accept.

The recent outbreak of measles shows what can happen if people make a choice not to vaccinate.  Measles is a serious and preventable disease.  This kind of outbreak does not happen if everyone is properly vaccinated.  It is hard for me to understand the fears that lead some parents to make a choice and accept these risks. Here is an interesting and related discussion (five-minute audio) from this morning’s NPR Morning Edition (follow this link below and then click on play/"Listen to the Story"):

Lastly, we believe parents who choose not to vaccinate can put other children at risk.  Infants, young children, and immunosuppressed children are at increased risk during an outbreak of preventable infections.

Sincerely,

Noel K. Frizzell, M.D.

Our Ironman Veteran, Dr. Chris Mathis!

We would like you to join us in congratulating our very own Dr. Chris Mathis on an amazing recent accomplishment. Dr. Mathis completed yet another "Ironman" competition! Watch out Robert Downey, Jr., there's a new Ironman in town.

The Ironman competition is considered to be one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the entire world. You can only become an Ironman after completing an unimaginable triathlon in a time limit of 17 hours. To be specific, competitors must complete a swim covering the distance of 2.4 miles, followed immediately by a 112-mile bicycle ride, then followed immediately by a marathon run of 26.2 miles.

Dr. Mathis became an Ironman in San Lucas, Mexico, in April of 2013. In that competition, he completed the event in 14 hours and 58 minutes. Incredibly, just a few weeks ago in Chattanooga, Dr. Chris completed the Ironman over two hours FASTER than he did in Mexico! In Chattanooga, he registered a time of 12 hours and 44 minutes.

We mentioned this after Dr. Mathis's last Ironman, but it is worth repeating again: The distance of the Ironman is the same distance as traveling from Memphis to Little Rock! Now, imagine doing this without a car, on your feet, on a bike, and in over two miles of water.

Said Dr. Mathis, "The best part of long distance racing for me is the training with friends. The Ironman is not a team sport, but training for one is!"

Congratulations to Dr. Mathis on this amazing accomplishment. He is setting a great example to our Pediatric Consultants family on how to live a healthy style...to the max!

Joining Forces with UT Department of Pediatrics and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital

Dear Families and Patients of Pediatric Consultants,

Dr. Noel K. Frizzell, M.D.
Pediatric Consultants has recently made the decision to join forces with the UT Department of Pediatrics and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital by utilizing the services of their hospitalist physicians.

The trend to have inpatient care of patients provided by hospital specialists began approximately 20 years ago in the adult world.  Hospitalist care has evolved for many reasons, and now they provide a good portion of inpatient care throughout the country.  Hospitalists concentrate their professional activities on hospitalized patients.  By doing so, they can provide a high quality service without the need to maintain a large office practice.

Most of the physicians in our group now prefer to devote their time to the office practice.  We have decided to turn over our hospital patients to the care of the Le Bonheur physicians because we have great confidence in their ability to provide high quality care.  They will be communicating regularly with us, and we will be involved in some of the management decisions and discharge planning. Also, our physicians at Pediatric Consultants will continue to make rounds few newborns.

This new process will be quite different from the way we previously cared for our hospital patients, but the physicians of Pediatric Consultants will continue to make sure that your children receive the best pediatric care available.  If unforeseen problems should arise during the transition period, we will certainly be available by phone and hope that you will contact us with your concerns.

Sincerely,

Noel K. Frizzell, M.D.

Congratulations Dr. Tough Mudder Bergeron!

Congratulations to Dr. Blake Bergeron for recently completing the Nashville Tough Mudder – go Dr. Blake! We asked Dr. Bergeron for a few words about the event, so here is his recap, followed by a few pictures!

"A few weeks ago, a group of us from Memphis took a trip to do the Tough Mudder outside of Nashville.  The tough mudder is a 10-12 mile obstacle mud race, that has become famous for its wide variety of obstacles, most notably jumping into a dumpster of ice cold water, climbing through huge mud pits and crossing the finish line after getting shocked by 50,000 volts of electricity.  This was my 2nd mudder, and I did the first one with Nurse Meg's husband, Matt, and another friend in St. Louis last year.   It actually takes some training to be able to do the obstacles and make it through the day...but teamwork and camaraderie help a lot too!  The most important thing is to find exercise that you love, go hard and have fun!  I really tried to get another doctor from Pediatric Consultants to do the race with me, but everyone said they were busy or something.  There's always next year, right Dr. Frizzell and Mathis?"

I'm thankful for my husband and his unconditional love.  I'm thankful for my three precious children who are my best teachers--about life and about pediatrics.  I'm thankful for 5 years of working at Pediatric Consultants and honored to be working with colleagues whose opinion I respect and trust."

Dr. Chris Mathis
"The thing I enjoy most about working with Pediatric Consultants is the sense of family, I feel like everybody there has my back. The thing I am most thankful for this Thanksgiving is that Dr Pendergrass is on call!! But VSS and I will help."

Dr. Blake Bergeron
"I am thankful for so much, but especially for God's blessings that come through my loving family and friend. To know you are loved and supported is a wonderful blessing. I love our PC team because I feel that we are an extension of each patients' family.  We get to see our children grow from newborn babies through young adulthood, and I love being a small part of that journey each and every day!  It is no small compliment to be trusted with the care of someones most loved person."

Meg Nickell
"I'm thankful for friends and family, and for my wonderful coworkers I consider family!  Working at PC is the best because I get to watch all of the children grow and succeed."

Cassandra Dyer
"I am thankful for my friends and family. What I love most about my job is getting to watch the kids grow. It's like being part of their extended family. We get to watch them grow up."

Lisa Tronsor
"I'm thankful for good health and the good health of my family and friends. One of the special things about Pediatric Consultants is our leadership. Our doctors set such a great example for us each and every day. It's GREAT to work for and with such wonderful friends. Every employee fills a certain niche and are much appreciated both within our practice and in the communities we are so fortunate to serve."

Stephanie Smith
"I am thankful for life. God has blessed my family and I to wake up every morning with a roof over our head, food on our table and clothes on our back and laughter in our belly and a mouth to praise him each and every day.  What I enjoy most about working with Pediatric Consultants is that when I come to work I feel like I never left home. 'Home is where the Heart is.' Being at work is like my second home.  When my home flooded earlier this year, my coworkers, the doctors and my supervisor all helped my family and blessed us with gifts, prayers, and kind words."

Maryellen Morgan
"I am thankful for good health, blessing, and guidance for my family and others. As a Pediatric Consultants associate, we work as a team to serve our patients better with care and understanding and that's what I love most: UNITY."

Terri Hardeman
"I'm very grateful for my family, my friends and my freedom. I have the best job in the world; I consider my colleagues at Pediatric Consultants 'family.' Our patients are wonderful and our docs and staff are the absolute best. Thanks for a wonderful 12 years, Pediatric Consultants, and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!"

Dr. Best is the Best Volunteer!

Dr. Jara Best is not only a fabulous pediatrician at Pediatric Consultants. She's also a great citizen and one of Memphis's top volunteers! She has received Volunteer Mid-South’s Spirit of Giving award for Adult Volunteer of the Year for her work with The Exchange Club Family Center. Dr. Best is a member of the center’s board and has served as a volunteer with the facility’s domestic violence programs for children and women, as well as the First STEPS (Skills to Ensure Parenting Success) program.

Dr. Best was recently profiled in the Memphis Daily News. She shared a little bit about her personal life, what makes volunteering at the Exchange Club so meaningful, and her favorite sports team!

Iron Doctor

Please join us in congratulating Pediatrics Consultants' own Dr. Chris Mathis on recently finishing the IRON MAN race in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico! The Iron Man is a grueling competition that combines incredibly long distances in swimming, biking, and running. It is viewed as the the ultimate athletic endurance competition in the world.

Just how far are the three components of the Iron Man? A 2.5-mile swim along the azure blue waters of the Sea of Cortes kicked off the Iron Man for Dr. Mathis, which was immediately followed by a 112-mile bike ride. Finally, the athletes have to run the marathon distance run of 26.2 miles between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, a feat of athletic endurance in and of itself.

To give some perspective on the astonishing length of the Iron Man, here are a few things to think about. The total distance for the competition is about 140 miles. That is the distance between Memphis and Little Rock, Arkansas! The running portion alone would be the equivalent of running from the Mississippi river all the way to our Pediatric Consultants office in Collierville!

Dr. Mathis completed the Iron Man in 14 hours and 58 minutes, all in the blazing heat of the Mexican sun. To combat the intense rays, he wore long sleeves and high SPF sun screen. Locals along the way referred to him as "the ghost" because of his white sunscreen appearance, but it was important to keep his skin well-protected!

Joining Dr. Mathis in the Iron Man Competition and in training was fourth-year medical student, Cayce Nawaf. Cayce created the University of Tennessee College of Medicine's 5K Race last year to raise money for scholarships for the medical school. The second annual installment of the Medicine in May 5K race will take place on May 18 at 8:30am at Health Sciences Park (formerly Forrest Park) and will include music from the midtown band The Vintones.

Dr. Mathis hopes that his achievements in the Iron Man will serve as a reminder for the importance of exercise in our lives, and also, the importance of wearing sunscreen. The next time you see Dr. Mathis at the office, make sure to give the Iron Man a high five!

Checking up with Dr. Frizzell about the Flu Vaccine

Dr. Kip Frizzell
You know all of that stuff you’re seeing on TV about how bad the flu is this year? It’s mostly true. Influenza is more widespread than I have seen in years. If there is any good news, it's that most of the patients are getting well reasonably quickly without any serious complications.

On television recently, I heard Dr. Nancy Snyderman say, in regard to the flu vaccine, that the CDC “nailed it.” I think this is mostly true, too. However, some of the patients we have seen with influenza actually had the vaccine. In any event, it may not offer 100% protection for everyone who takes it, but it is still the best protection we have to prevent flu outbreaks. The vaccine prevents most influenza and likely makes the virus less serious for those who get it.

In case you haven’t heard, it’s important to cover your cough, wash your hands, and don’t go to work or school when you’re sick.  These measures will, of course, make a huge difference, but this year you will most likely come in contact with someone who has the flu, so the vaccine is your best protection!

Introducing Dr. Meg West!

Dr. Meg West
We are really thrilled to welcome Dr. Meg West as the newest physician to the Pediatric Consultants team! Please join us in giving Dr. West a warm welcome. She will be seeing new patients at our downtown Le Bonheur office and also at our East office. Please click here to view Dr. West's online bio and schedule on the Pediatric Consultants website.

Dr. West is a 2009 graduate of the University of Arkansas's College of Medicine and completed her residency training at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

We sat down this week with Dr. West to ask her a few questions so that you could get to know her better!

Why did you decide to become a pediatrician?

For the kids. So cliche. When I started medical school I had other plans, but then I did my rotation at the the Arkansas Children's Hospital. Medicine can be very emotional, but kids are always so happy and resilient and that makes the entire hospital and pediatric office a happier place. The heart and joy in the children makes the effort and time spent completely worth it.

What do you do to stay healthy?

To stay healthy, I bike, run, play tennis, and swim! Of course, a healthy diet is always important to my lifestyle as well.

What else do you do in your free time?
My free time is usually reserved for my friends and family. I have a large immediate and extended family who still live here in Memphis and are a large part of my life. As a member of the Board of Trustees for the Pink Palace Family of Museums and Christian Brother's University I give much of my time to these entities.

What are your favorite things to do in Memphis?

I love Memphis. Mostly because my family is here and so close, but also because there are so many things to do. The Cooper Young area, the FedEx Forum, Shelby Farms, the Levitt Shell, South Main and Beale Street, the River, and all of the museums all bring the richness to the city that is hard to find anywhere else.

Dolly Parton Works "9-5" to Make Sure Your Children Read 0-5 and For Life!

Do you have children under the age of 5? Would you like them to receive a book, free of charge, every month, delivered directly to your home door? If so ... you need to continue reading!

You're probably wondering what the catch is, right? Well, there isn't one! Thanks to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and Shelby County's Books from Birth every child in Shelby County is eligible to receive a total of 60 books right from birth, completely free of charge. The books are chosen by Dolly Parton and a team of educators so that they are each age appropriate and fun to read.

Dolly's program began in East Tennessee's Sevier County in 1995 and it didn't take her long to realize that her Imagination Library could benefit not just the state of Tennessee but the entire country, in any area that could support it financially. Shelby County's Books from Birth (and those who support the program philanthropically) makes this possible in our neck of the woods – it is easy to sign up if you haven't already.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up today! You can do so from the Shelby County Books from Birth's website here: booksfrombirth.org/enroll-a-child/. You can also visit their facebook page or learn more about the history of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

Parent-Recommended Apps for Kids

We recently asked parents on facebook what their kids' favorite apps are, and we got a lot of great responses. Here they are, in case you're looking for something new!

Kirsten: Dr. Seuss Books. There is even an auto play so it will read to them. Great for when mom has a doctor appointment.

Kyleigh: Elmo Calls - Elmo pops up talking to them about various things. Perfect for 1-3 year olds in my opinion. My almost 3 year old loves it.

Kimberly: ABA “Applied Behavioral Analysis”. If you go to kindergarten.com it will give you a link to all the apps that are available. There are apps appropriate for all age groups!

Crystal: Smule's Magic Piano. My kids (ages 4 & 8) love this. You tap the dots and it plays the notes/chords. Really good mix of classical to pop to children's songs.

Emily: For my 8-yr-old- Angry birds space, Madden NFL 12, Temple Run. For my 4-yr-old- Fruit Ninja, Super Why, and Garbage

Jessica: Collyn (8) loves draw something and scramble with friends. She is very artsy and loves playing w her friends. Also scramble with friends allows her to work on her spelling and vocabulary while being timed!

Laura: My 2 year old loves Vocal Zoo. You touch the animals picture and it makes the sound and tells you what animal it is :)

Berenice: Abc song, where is puppy, abc (age 2)

Lori: The Monster at the End of this Book featuring Grover. It's a lot of fun!

Christy: Tozzle puzzles for my 3yr old and power ranger samurai

Jennifer: Stack the States

Jessica: Smarter than a fifth grader. It's great!!!

Tiffany: PBS kids!

JM: The one with the animals that repeat what you say. She downloaded 8 of them (Talking Tom).

CPR Saves Lives

As summer time heats up, many of us are headed to the swimming pool or the beach for some fun in the sun. But summer also means a spike in accidental drownings among children. Our own Dr. Jara Best made the news last month when she and a nurse administered CPR to a little girl who had nearly drowned.

About her role in saving Shawanda Birdsey’s life, Dr. Best said, “It was indeed a life changing experience to say the least.  After I realized that I had actually helped save her life, I was a little overwhelmed. However, I was also very grateful that I was at the right place at the right time to do what had to be done to help Shawanda."

It was nothing short of a miracle that two medical professionals were on the scene, but it got us thinking…what if they hadn’t been there? As Dr. Best says, “You do not have to be in the medical field to learn how to perform CPR. I think EVERYONE should learn CPR! As we all know, accidents happen all of the time and you never know when someone might need help."

“CPR stands for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. A person who is unresponsive, not breathing, and does not have a heartbeat or pulse needs CPR,” says Dr. Best. You can find CPR and first aid training classes through the American Red Cross or the American HeartAssociation.

We are so thankful that Dr. Best was able to remain calm and execute her CPR training flawlessly. She saved one little girl’s life, but we hope that her story will inspire many parents and caregivers to learn CPR and first aid or to get a refresher course!

Dr. Best Saves the Day

Photo from the Commercial Appeal

Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Our own Dr. Jara Best and Nurse Shelia Dalrymple served on a sequestered jury in a murder trial. After a long day of deliberations, Sheriff's deputies escorted the jury back to their hotel, where 6-year-old Shawanda Birdse had just been pulled from floating face down in the pool. She had no pulse and was not breathing, so the medical professionals and jurors quickly administered CPR to save the little girl's life! We are so proud of Dr. Best for thinking quickly and so glad she happened to be in the right place at the right time! You can read more about the heroics in the following links:

The King of Pediatric Consultants

Elvis Presley with Dr. Mathis at Wine Opener
A few weeks ago, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Memphis hosted a benefit at the Playhouse on the Square. The Wine Opener featured wine tastings, gourmet food, and Pediatric Consultants' own Dr. Blake Bergeron as Elvis Presley!

Dr. Bergeron says, "I got involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in order to help raise awareness for this disease and to raise money for this great cause. The foundation is a major supporter of research efforts, but that is not all they do. They help families get assistance for testing, medical supplies, medications, and offer a support network for those affected by the disease."

"Cystic Fibrosis is one of the most common genetic disorders and it affects thousands of children.  These patients are very brave individuals, and we as a practice take care of several children affected with the disorder.  It is a life long disease, and these children need frequent medical care.  They face a life of daily medications, breathing treatments, vest treatments, and doctor visits.  Back in 1950, children with CF had a life expectancy that barely included elementary school.  Through extensive fund raising and research, major advances have been made in the field, and today patients can expect to live to the 40s and beyond!  In fact, emerging research is suggesting that there may the possibility of a genetic cure!"

Part of the evening was the "Sixty Five Roses" competition. According to legend, this is what one young CF patient called his disease when he couldn't pronounce the proper name. Several local florists donated some beautiful arrangements, and part of the evening called for "celebrity judges" (including Elvis!) to pick the winner.

This was Dr. Bergeron's first gig as Elvis, but party-goers would have guessed he was a professional! Dr. Bergeron's neighbors served on the committee for the fundraiser and recognized his untapped potential to be the King of Rock and Roll. He says, "I was thrown into the Elvis impersonating business, I can assure you! I figured it would be for a great cause, so I volunteered.  The costume was donated generously by Mr. Lincoln's Costume Shoppe in Midtown, and when I tried it on, I didn't really think it was me! I even sent a picture to my mom when I was in costume and she didn't recognize me!"

"The evening was incredible.  It's not everyday that you get to go to a party with Elvis!  I posed for what seemed like hundreds of pictures.  At first I was uncomfortable, dressed as such a spectacle, but after a little while everyone was giving me high-fives and shouting, "Well, there's Elvis!"  I tried to get as much into character as possible, so I practiced talking like Elvis and even tried to mimic his little smirk!  Not so sure I pulled it off though.  Someone asked me to sing, but I politely declined. I told them they want people to come to the party, not run away screaming.  At this point, I'm not available for bookings. However, if demand picks up, I may consider starting a side job!"
